For many people, celebrations have become synonymous with beer. And for us fun-loving Pinoys, there is no other quintessential celebratory beverage that best embodies fine beer and good times than San Miguel beer.
Our family is no exception to the SMB-loving populace. Hard liquor is welcome on certain occasions, yes, but beer offers comfort like no alcoholic beverage can. At home (and away), I always run to the crisp, distinctly Pinoy-brewed taste of San Miguel beer. It’s my all-time go-to guy beer. Whether it be a night out with the girls, a random family gathering, or a one-man beer break after an exhausting day of chores and office work, San Miguel beer brands offer drinking experience that’s above the ordinary.
For 120 years, this home-grown favorite has been serving quality beer to lager-loving men from all walks of life. Recently, the brand outdid itself once more by coming up with a premium selection of award-winning, great tasting brews for the beer drinker with a discriminating palate: San Miguel Premium All-Malt, San Miguel Super Dry, and Cerveza Negra, collectively known as San Miguel Lifestyle Brews.
Now these three and I are no stranger to each other. I have tried these before and unique as they are from other San Mig brands like Strong Ice, Pale Pilsen and San Mig Light, I’ve always wanted to recreate a beer pairing degustation with them at home. So you could just imagine how I screamed “Hallelujah!” from here till Tuesday upon learning that eight months after losing the baby bump, I can now sneak into the kitchen one night per week for a bottle while the baby’s asleep (Repeat: that’s one to two bottles of beer max per week for all ya breastfeeding moms out there, four hours before your baby’s next feeding. Otherwise you might have to deal with a SMB – stoned, muddled baby.)
Of the three, the one that probably best captures that good ol’ San Miguel beer flavor is the Super Dry. It has that strong and dry, yet suave kick and a bitter aftertaste that goes well with pulutan and pica-pica. I usually pair it with easy-to-make Mexican favorites like cheese flautas and nachos. I find that the robust flavors of tomato salsa, cheese, ground beef, onion and bell pepper balances out the bitterness of the San Miguel Super Dry.
But while Cerveza Negra and Super Dry are equally brilliant, I reckon the Premium All-Malt to be the most versatile of the three and this momma’s favorite so far. Thin, light and clean, this deep yellow brew of art leans towards a gourmet and upscale taste. And because it’s incredibly light both on the palate and on the belly, it can also be a terrific starter to a meal along with a plate of fresh greens.
While the taste and bitterness is a bit complex, it is lighter than the other all-malt beers, with very subtle sweetness and hops to match virtually any dish. I just love how it takes seafood to new heights and how it complements the natural saltiness of crustaceans. Calamari is a wonderful pair for the Premium All-Malt, but home-made baked mussels take the cake. Suave and light as it is, the Premium All-Malt amplifies the sweet, creamy taste of butter and the piquant taste of garlic, and blends in exquisitely with delicate mussel meat and sharp cheddar cheese *wiping off drool. Haha*.
Mommy me time! Enjoying an ice cold glass of San Miguel Premium All-Malt with fried calamari and baked tahong. |
Now I could blab on and on about how the San Miguel Lifestyle Brews trio could change your beer drinking experience (It did mine. And threw away my misconceptions of sweets and beer as a disastrous pair.), or you could try do it yourself. I’d rather you try. My money is on you raving about the experience afterwards 🙂

I don't drink much but when I do, I like the San Miguel Apple. My hubby likes SMB too. I think it's a staple in all Filipino gatherings. The pulutans are mouthwatering.

@Henry's mom, I haven't tried the SMB Apple variant but I've heard pretty good reviews about it. Will definitely try it one of these days.
